The Kirra SurfStock Festival, Nov 5-8th, 2009 is the culmination of the campaign to Bring Back Kirra and a reason to celebrate its culture and continuing concern to manage the coastal environment of our beach, surf and reefs.
On Australia Day 09 over 3000 people turned out at Kirra for the Paddle Out, Joel Parkinson won the Quicksilver Pro at Big Groyne in early March and asked everyone to get behind the community’s campaign. Shortly afterwards the QLD State election was called and both sides of politics offered 1.5 million to return the once famous Point break.
In August the Bligh Government began work with Gold Coast City Council to remove sand and curve the shoreline. There will be future extensive sand clearing, creating suns and contouring the shoreline from Council and talks between respective NSW and QLD State ministers Tony Kelly and Kate Jones agreed on back pumping to Final, utilizing multiple outlets such as the West pipe at Snapper and a more flexible approach to the overall sand pumping operation which was a direct result of the community’s push to persuade Government and Council into action. The Kirra SurfStock Festival has a little bit of everything for the public, a coastal club sandwich with celebrates the occasion and ironically placed 40 years after the famous 3day and Woodstock Festival.
Kicking off the fun will be the opening Party of the Coolangatta Sands with epic surf movies on Thursday night. Friday night will be a massive fundraiser at the Kirra Surf Club with Hypnotist Mark Anthony and his tribute to Ronricco plus Dan Hannaford/Dave Murray Band for the Surfrider Foundation with their annual National conference at Southern Cross Uni. Saturday will be the Kirra Junior teams 1day event hosted by the Kirra Boardriders club. At 5:30pm, Sandra L Rodgers will launch her book ‘Waves of Torment’ at the Bilinga Surf Club while Saturday night will screen Tim Bonython’s ASMF (surf movies) from 8pm at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary as well as the Grand Opening of the Surf World Surf Museum and the Party follows onto the Coolangatta Sands.
Sunday starts with the Denis Callinan Beach walk and Greenline SUP Race from Currumbin to Kirra beach the venue of Beachcare dune session, beach markets, beach volley ball, Miss Surfstock quest and the Live music thanks to Max Judo, Tim Gaze and Peter Howe, The Genes, Birdy and Quiet Excitement, Dan Hannaford and Dave Murray, Minus Equilibrium, Issac Paddon, Tokyo Beef and Westerly Windina. The Post Party will be back at the Coolangatta Sands and we’ll all need another year to recover for next year’s event!
A big thank you to all the sponsors including: Connecting Southern Gold Coast, Coopers, Coolangatta Sands and the many volunteers.
Mahalo!
